Year 6 Visit to London

The children in Year 6 had a very busy visit to London over a long weekend 6th – 9th June.  After travelling up by train on Friday morning and having a picnic ion the Embankment near the London Eye they went to see the musical Wicked at the Apollo theatre at 7pm.  To quote some of the children the musical was “wicked” and “epic”.

The weather on Saturday morning was torrential rain so the children walked to the Science Museum in their raincoats and were quite wet by the time they got there!   After lunch they walked to Buckingham Palace and the Mall by which time the sun had come out and it was quite hot.  The children saw the sentries and mounted cavalry and the surprises of the afternoon were a trip to Downing Street where all the children had their picture taken outside No.10 (and some had a peek inside when the front door was opened) and also to Westminster Cathedral where they had their picture taken with Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster.

On Sunday, another hot day, the children enjoyed a boat trip on the Thames and then went to Greenwich where they saw the meridian and explored the Cutty Sark.  Finally, on Monday they visited the Tower of London where the boys were suitably amused by the Bloody Tower, before heading to Waterloo station and the train back to Weymouth.

All the children, some of whom had not been to London before, enjoyed themselves very much, despite having to walk about 5 miles a day.  To quote one: “I loved this amazing opportunity and will never forget it.
