Football vs Wyke Regis Girls

Playing in their first full match this year, St Augustine’s girls’ team gave a very good account of themselves against a strong Wyke Regis team on Wednesday 22nd November 2023.. The game started quickly, as Wyke mounted several dangerous attacks. However, the St Augustine’s defence were resolute, with several strong, well-timed tackles being made by Staniya and Lilly, who both defended with confidence and bravery throughout. Despite several superb saves from Sienna, Wyke were eventually able to make the breakthrough, with an unstoppable strike into the top corner. Far from the heads of St Augustine’s dropping however, this spurred them on. They continued to battle for every ball and started to make progression further up the pitch. The tenacity and energy of Kiki and Maisie meant that more and more chances started to be created, with Isabelle constantly on the look for a through ball that she could run on to. This proved fruitful late on in the first half, as Isabelle latched onto a well-placed pass, and used her pace to run past the defence and slot it past the goalkeeper to bring the scores level. However, just before half-time, Wyke mounted another attack, with the same player unleashing a powerful strike into the net, bringing the score to 2-1 to Wyke at half-time.

The togetherness of the St Augustine’s team was evident at the break, with words of encouragement shared amongst each other. This galvanised them as they started to make a number of attacking movements themselves, eventually leading to another goal. A superb run and cross was deflected in off a defender, bringing the score to 2-2.

Both sides had chances to win it, but the goalkeepers were proving to be defiant, with both of them making several impressive saves, with the game ending at 2-2.

Both schools can be very proud of themselves; the game was played in a wonderful, competitive spirit, great teamwork was displayed throughout and we look forward to playing Wyke again in the future.
