A highly competitive and well fought game saw the two teams come away with a draw. St Augustine’s started quickly, with their high energy and enthusiasm clear from the start. Their efforts were soon rewarded, after a threaded pass from Henry found the feet of William. He took a second to compose himself and, Sir Geoff Hurstesque, calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to put St Augustine’s one goal up.

The high energy and pressing of St Augustine’s continued to present chances early on, but Wyke defended strongly as a team, with the goal keeper also making several important saves, repelling the efforts of Max, Henry, Kiki and William.

In the St Augustine’s goal, Alfie made two very good saves to keep the score at 1-0, with the defence of Staniya, Lucas and Lily also reading the game well to stop the progress of Wyke on several occasions. At half time, the score stood at St Augustine’s 1-0 Wyke.

The second half started in a similar vein to the first, with St Augustine’s pressing high up the pitch to search for a second goal. This came soon after, as a well struck shot from Henry found the back of the net, bringing the score to 2-0. Strong work in the midfield from Aaron, ensured that this was the score moving into half time.

Wyke responded strongly however, and forced a series of corners, each one more well taken than the next. Eventually, one corner was whipped over with great force, and took a slight deflection on its way into the net, bringing the score to 2-1. Further strong attacking play quickly brought Wyke level to 2-2, with a powerful, solo run getting the finish it deserved.

There were further chances for both sides, with St Augustine’s notably having one, final effort clip off the post. However, a draw was a fair result, with neither side deserving to lose.

Again, we’d like to thank Wyke for playing the game with a wonderfully competitive, yet sportsmanlike spirit. We look forward to playing them again.
