Football Report

St Augustine’s went into their first football match of the season, knowing that it was going to be a challenge against a bigger school. We discussed beforehand about working as a team and showing resilience; this was shown in abundance.

As expected, Chickerell started quickly and scored a good team goal to move 1-0 up. Following a spell of possession Chickerell then scored two more goals from very well taken corners. At this point many teams would have dropped their heads or started arguing with each other; not this team. St Augustine’s kept battling and, after goalkeeper George claimed a corner, he sent an Ederson style kick towards Harry who scored magnificently on the half-volley. 3-1.

St Augustine’s started the second half as they ended the first, battling constantly and sending their attacking players into goal-scoring opportunities. Sure enough, Xavier spotted Harry making a darting run and sent him through on goal. Composure personified, Harry took the ball around the goalkeeper to bring the score back to 3-2. Soon after, another attack was mounted and Xavier scored the equaliser at the back post to bring the scores level.

Chickerell responded strongly after this and had long spells of possession; it took all of the determination of the defence and the goalkeeper, to stop them from scoring several goals. However, the pressure eventually told and Chickerell deservedly went 4-3 ahead. Yet again, St Augustine’s showed resolve and resilience of which they should be very proud. Xavier and Harry linked up yet again on the left, with Harry managing to stab home another equaliser: 4-4. Not settling for a point, St Augustine’s continued to press forward and Louie was there to tuck home to put St Augustine’s one up at 5-4.

St Augustine’s held on to win 5-4 in a very competitive game which was hard fought by both teams. However, more important than the result was the teamwork, attitude and resilience on display. The whole team can be very proud; they did themselves and the school very proud.
