Football Report 2

St Augustine’s girls entertained Chickerell in their first ever match on Thursday. Despite not coming out on top this time, they did themselves proud against a very strong team, most of whom have played together for many years.

St Augustine’s started fast, with Sammi scoring a calm finish from close range. Not resting on their laurels, Masie scored another goal to double their lead. However, Chickerell responded strongly and worked hard to bring the game back to 2-2. Following this was the goal of the match following a free kick to St Augustine’s. Not put off by the distance from the goal, Sammi fired an unstoppable effort into the top corner to re-take the lead. Chickerell continued to battle though, and scored an equaliser just before half-time to bring the scores level at 3-3.

The second-half saw more goals scored, with both teams showing passion and commitment in both defence and attack. Tilly showed her determination to score a deserved goal, while Masie also managed to double her tally. Sammi completed a well worked team move to deservedly complete her hat-trick. While Chickerell scored several more well-taken goals, to bring the final score to 8-6 in favour of Chickerell, this does not tell the whole story. Aside from the excellent attacking form of Isabelle, Maisie, Tilly and Sammi, Isla and Emilia defended admirably. They often repelled the quality attack from Chickerell and made several superb tackles. In goal, Sienna also made a number of highly important goal-saving blocks and saves, always giving everything for the team.

So, to score 6 goals in their first ever was a huge achievement. The defensive display and teamwork was also very impressive and will only improve as the girls are able to play in more matches together and gain more experience. We thank Chickerell for travelling and giving us a great game; we look forward to playing them again after Christmas.
