Astronomer visits Year 5

25th January 2018

On Wednesday 24th January, Year 5 welcomed Mr Steve Tonkin into school . Mr Tonkin is an astronomer and is part of the Wessex Astronomy Club.

He came in for the morning and talked to us about the Solar System; including the planets, asteroids, meteors and black holes. He showed us some amazing photographs - some of which he had taken himself in his back garden and explained how the solar system worked.

We also went into the hall and he showed us how the different planets orbit around the sun.

After break, he used a model to show how and why day and night happen and how the seasons occur.

It was a very interesting and informative morning and the children asked some fascinating questions.
